All types of coaches, whether they are skill base or physical base will be using some kind of performance analysis to map their athlete’s progression. These tools used by coaches to monitor stages of progression can be targeted to measure an athletes skill and physical development, their tactically progression which ultimately drives results.
The stages of progression a coach utilises can be compiled by the coach depending upon their own coaching philosophy, but much of the time the coach and athlete will use the performance analysis tools which their sport’s national governing body develops and applies. These are usually made up of testing batteries, normative data, performance targets and ultimately results.
Performance Coaches use results to monitor an athlete’s progression, but they also have other means to assess an athlete’s development outside of competition. These methods a lot of the time give the coaches greater insight into their athletes performance.
Some of those insights are listed below:
Key Performance Indicators (KPI) - A performance indicator or key performance indicator is a type of performance measurement. KPIs evaluate the success of an organisation/club/athlete or of a particular activity engaged in.
Sports Specific Testing Batteries - Testing battery refers to the complex of tests that are performed in a short period of time, typically within 1 or 2 days. The advantage of the testing battery in relation to single tests is that it gives a more complex feedback of the state of the athlete and allows to evaluate multiple abilities.
Normative Data - Normative data is data from a reference population that establishes a baseline distribution for a score or measurement, and against which the score or measurement can be compared.
Goal Setting - Goal setting involves the development of an action plan designed to motivate and guide a person or group toward a goal. Goal setting can be guided by goal-setting criteria such as SMART criteria. The SMART goal setting model was covered in the Multi Skills workshops.
