Dave Smith runs DS Performance, this is his story. Before Bobsleigh Dave competed at athletics, specifically in the horizontal jumps, so Triple Jump and Long Jump. Dave competed for my club in the British leagues (BAL) and for my 2 Universities in the British University Championships. Dave also did a couple of Powerlifting competitions alongside Athletics competing in the British University Powerlifting champs and the British Deadlift champs.
Dave had to have ankle surgery due to a jumps injury. He was told not to do the jumps events anymore, but he could sprint and lift. His athletics club team manager, who was a former winter Olympian in the 4-man Bobsleigh suggested he tried out for Bobsleigh because he gained some muscle mass and was running fast with the extra body mass.
After contacting the GB Bobsleigh Association about trying out for the team, they invited him down to go through a physical testing battery to measure his physical abilities. Dave passed the physical tests and was invited to attend a training session with the squad for a push start session at the push track at Bath University to learn the starting techniques.
Dave was invited to attend the official selection day for the team, where they went through a series of physical tests, including push start trials. He was selected to join the team after these trials and 2 days later was off of Italy for ‘on ice’ training and team selections.
Dave was successful with selection for the team and was then put into a crew for the upcoming season, his first season in the GB Bobsleigh Team. Dave went on to represent Great Britain for a number of years competing in World Championships, World Cup, and Europa Cup competitions, in both the 2-man and 4-man events.
