The ABC’s are the origins for the components of movement, you will find much of the literature around them focusing in on baby/child movement development, through to full adolescent growth.
Agility – the ability to move quickly and easily.
Balance – an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady.
Co-ordination – the ability to use different parts of the body together smoothly and efficiently.
Are the ABC’s underrated, under trained and over looked when it comes to people’s physical performance? These are questions I’ve been asked before, because the ABC’s are required by all athletes for all the major sports. Yes, sports are made up of different fundamental movements and various components of physical/body movements, but these all stem from the ABC’s.
So how many athletes and coaches actually take the time and include elements of the ABC’s into their training programme. Regardless of the sport, athletes should take time to make sure that they are moving correctly. This means correcting muscles imbalances, range of movement imbalances and correct firing/sequencing patterns, this also means practicing basic components of movement.
The point in the training year where athletes breakdown the key movement patterns, and skills of their sport and train each aspect individually usually takes place during the general conditioning phase of training. So at the beginning of their annual cycle they can take the time to readdress any break down in basic movement or functional patterns that they or their coaches have identified.
It is widely recognised that so many of the world’s best ever athletes always at some point in their training year returned to work on basic movements and skills, because they knew that being technically proficient with great movement was the key to their success. So, based on this, should we all as athletes spend more time on perfecting the ABC’s and less time on highly complex training methods?
